How not to encourage volunteers at a quilt guild

  1. Totally ignore the contributions whether physical donations or effort;  really makes the volunteer want to continue;
  2. Point out all the shortcomings of the volunteer especially their politics;  even liberal democrats get fed up after a long tirade;
  3. Allow small groups to vocally bully the majority;

Stash bee tutorial

This is my very first attempt at a block tutorial!img_2160

this is the ten inch finished size block for February. Please do in it in shades of Blue! It started off with a bag of scraps:

img_2151

Yup I sorted all my scraps by color back in November – this is the blue bag.img_2153

I took out the predominately all blue scraps – I loved the dragon flies but they didn’t meet the final cut! You need to find 21 one color  scraps – that read from light to dark. But you need a selection from light to dark of that color.

Find the darkest shade of the color you picked. For me it was this awesome piece of blue.

img_2156

You need to cut ten squares of the darkest shade – they measure 2.5 x 2.5 inches.

Arange your scraps from dark to light;

img_2154

You need to cut 15 squares from scraps of your color that measure 2.5 x 2.5 inches and arrange them in five rows of three blocks each from dark rows  at the bottom to light rows at the top at the top.

img_2160

Then the flying geese blocks need five 4.5 x 2.5 inch rectangles for the flying geese. Pick five shades of your color from dark to light. The darkest fabric that you cut ten squares from will be the outside of the flying geese. I am assuming that everyone knows how to make flying geese using the block method??

img_2157

So assemble the  blocks with five rows of  three 2.5 x 2.5 inch squares and one flying geese each. The darker shades on the bottom going to lighter as you assemble.

Hope this isn’t too confusing!Here is a link to how to make speedy flying geese blocks!

SPEED PIECING  METHOD A : good for piecing just a few units, as it makes just one  at a time.

To make a Flying Geese unit following Speed Piecing Method A you need one RECTANGLE the length you want the geese unit to be plus 1/2″  times the width you want it to be plus 1/2″, AND two SQUARES that measure half the desired length plus 1/2″. Place a small square atop the left corner of the rectangle, right sides together. On the back of the small square, draw a diagonal line. Sew on this diagonal line. Trim off the excess seam allowance, and press the remainder towards the outer triangle. Repeat with another square on the opposite end. So that you aren’t wasting any fabric, sew the snippets that you are cutting off in pairs, and you will have some neat small half squares to use in another project! EXAMPLE: to get a 2″ x 4″ finished Flying Geese unit you would use a 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ geese rectangle, and two 2 1/2″ squares.
 Hop I haven’t confused everyone! 🙂

I made an applique quilt!!!!

img_2167

Seriously this is the very first mostly applique quilt that I have ever made!

I’ve done others that had some applique on them but this was the first biggie – the big Kahuna! It’s called Boho Bliss and it is a pattern from Tammy Silvers – Tamarinis is her company name. I loved it when I saw it but wondered if I could do it! and the answer is yes if you put your mind to it you can do it!!!

Most of the fabric except for the light green and the background fabric were from my stash(which says something about the size of my fabric holdings…). I relly like it – there are some elements that I will incorporate into my next quilt – i liked them that much!!!

Now to quilt it!!!! 🙂

WIPs

January – time to start finishing last year’s Resolutions??

Okay I have been bad, starting way too many projects and finishing not quite as many as I would like! But it’s the journey not the destination right??? LOL I used that on my parents lots of time!!! So here are a few things that I have been working on!! These are some border log cabins blocks in Moda’s Juniper Berry (which I just love). They are going on my Christmas medalllion quilt!

Opps!

There are some days when you can’t win….I drove my husband to work the other day and somehow he lost his car key…..we have spent hours/days looking for it (and as a consequence my bedroom is really really clean at the moment because everything got moved!).  Colonies of dust bunnies have died….and suddenly the key emerges…not at home but in the parking lot at work!! augh!!!! and a little the worse for wear….but it still works!!!!

More on the steampunk challenge

Opps forgot some of the photos – actually I am still feeling my way around the site…trying to figure out how to import my photos, so apologies but trying to learn this.

Photo shows a close up of tombstone rubbing from Susan Lenz’s workshop. If you have a chance take a class from her – it was awesome. She gives so much – info, techniques, materials and lots and lots about how to get started being a fiber artist. It was incredible!

Rising to a challenge

31 day blog challenge (1)Okay there is a 31 day challenge to actually write something on your blog….so with a deep breath and a hearty hi-ho-sewing machine…here goes! Thanks Cheryl Sleboda for the creative push!

So first here’s my latest attempt at something arty! Yes it is old lace doilies and keys – something from Susan Lenz’s workshop that I attended in September…finally I did something with all the wonderful ideas that Susan presented! The Badass Quilters Society had a steampunk challenge that i got caught up into – Maddie sent me about 35 fabric strips and yardage to use in a quilted project. This is my representation of Season of Remembrance…lots of old textiles and lace, buttons, and even a grave rubbing!
